Thomas's Story

Text size

Thomas "Tom" Dale Hadley, 74, passed away at his home in Milroy on Thursday, March 16, 2017. He was born Sept. 16, 1942, to Fred Bruce and Virginia Charlotte (Davis) Hadley in Rushville, Indiana, one of seven children.
He married Bertha M. Tallent on June 8, 1968, and they were married nearly 49 years, and she survives. They had 2 children and 5 grandchildren.
Tom attended school in Rushville and was a member of the Milroy Christian Church, Anderson Twp. Volunteer Fire Dept., and Milroy Community Club. During his youth, he worked with his family at the old bakery located at 4th and Sexton Street in Rushville and loved to tell stories of this. He also worked several years at Pittsburgh Plate Glass in Shelbyville. In 1970 he began his lifetime work at Harcourt Industries in Milroy and was there for 39 years until his retirement. He, along with some very close friends were responsible for starting the Rushville 4th of July Fireworks.
Tom loved driving a truck for Harcourt Industries for many years and always enjoyed telling stories of the people he met at the schools and his experiences when making deliveries. He could also give directions to most Bob Evans Restaurants in the many states he traveled as they were his favorite places to eat. Tom always loved bicycling and after his retirement from Harcourt's he began working on bicycles and collecting old bikes. He became known as "The Bicycle Man" to many and his home could always be found by the great number of bicycles in his front yard and driveway. He truly loved the Anderson Twp. Volunteer Fire Dept. and the people there. His saddest time was when his health prevented him from continuing service with them but he always kept their scanner close.
Tom is survived by his wife, Bertha Marie (Tallent) of Milroy; a daughter, Thomasina Michelle (Darrin) McGowan, Rushville; a son, Michael Dale (Jessica) Hadley of Rushville; a brother, Fred Hadley of Anderson; grandchildren, Trenton, Chloe, and Kallie Moore and Sadie and Tucker Meckes. He was preceded in death by his parents, 3 brothers and 2 sisters.
Visitation will be 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday, March 19, 2017, at the Milroy Christian Church. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, March 20, 2017, at the Milroy Christian Church with Rev. Ron Simbro. Burial will follow at the East Brook Cemetery in Milroy.
Arrangements entrusted to Burns Funeral Home in Milroy.
