Ruth Louise Sweet, 79, passed away on Wednesday evening March 29, 2017, with her family at her side.
The only child of Richard and Mary Evelyn (Pope) Ryman, Ruth was born on February 26, 1938.
Raised on the family farm in Rush County, she married her childhood sweetheart, Dwight Sweet, on August 27, 1960. He passed away on April 15, 2013. A Rushville Consolidated High School alumna, she graduated with a Bachelor Degree from Purdue University where she was also President of the University's chapter of the Zeta Tau Alpha sorority. She received her Master of Science degree in Education from Ball State Teacher's College. After teaching high school Consumer Sciences for a few years, she left the classroom to devote herself full-time to supporting her husband and children. Ruth held various leadership positions in the Officers' Wives Clubs at the Air Force Bases where she and Dwight were stationed during his twenty-year career as a pilot with the US Air Force. She was an integral part of her children's lives and spent hours volunteering for many Parent Teacher Associations, school groups, Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts troops, and other organizations. She was a lifetime member of the First Presbyterian Church of Lewisville and delighted in working with young people whenever she could. She was a member of the Sunshine Club and enjoyed her experiences while serving on the Rush County Farm Bureau Board. An avid reader and lifetime learner, she always encouraged those around her to "bloom where you are planted".
Survivors include her children David (Linda) Sweet of Lewisville, Indiana; Deborah (Bryan) Hummel also of Lewisville, Indiana; and Richard Sweet of Springville, Indiana. Also surviving are her grandchildren Nathan, Joshua and Lucas Hummel and Cole and Peyton Sweet as well as several cousins. Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. in the church's Fellowship Hall. Burial will be held at Ebenezer Cemetery in Rush County at the convenience of the family.
