Mary's Story

Mary Priscilla (Powell) Burkett, 95 formerly of Dewey St., Argos, Indiana and currently of Rushville, Indiana entered her heavenly home, September 12, 2017 at Our Hospice in Columbus, Indiana due to failing health. She was born November 9, 1921 to Loda (Dowds) and Glen Powell in Macy, Indiana. Priscilla graduated from Macy High School with the class of 1939 and Indianapolis City Hospital school of Nursing in 1943.
She then volunteered for the U.S. Army Nurse Corps where she served for 2 ½ years at Ashford General Hospital, White Sulpher Springs, West Virginia; Ft. Knox, Ky; and on the islands of Tinian and Saipan before returning home on Christmas eve 1945. She was honorably discharged as a 1st Lieutenant in 1946.
On June 24, 1950 she married Devon Burkett, who preceded her in death in 1986.
She loved nursing. She was the school nurse for Argos Community Schools for 21 years before retiring in 1986. She had also worked for Dr. James Hampton and Dr. Ralph Rea.
Priscilla is survived by her daughter, Cathy Burkett of Rushville, and Jim (Debbie) Burkett of Argos; three granddaughters, Jennifer (Aaron) Hutchison; Katie Burkett and Megan Burkett; 3 great granddaughters and 2 great grandsons.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Husband, Brothers - Cecil Powell and Kenneth Powell, and a Niece Laura Powell Denecke.
She was a member of Parkside Community Church in Argos where she served as financial secretary for over 20 years, Missionary Review Society and Walnut Ruralettes Extension Homemaker Club.
Friends may visit with the family on Sunday, September 17 from 4 - 8pm at the Parkside Community Church, 225 S. Michigan St., Argos, Indiana
Funeral Services will be held on Monday September 18, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at the Parkside Community Church.
Burial will follow at the Maple Grove Cemetery, Argos, Indiana with the United States Army Honor Guard and James Lowell Corey American Legion Post #68, Argos, Indiana conducting Military Honors.
