Hubert Lewis Matney, 97, of Bloomington, passed away Nov. 3, 2016 at Hearthstone Health Campus, Bloomington. Born Jan. 5, 1919, in Andersonville, he was the son of Chester and Mary (Scott) Matney. Hubert was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church, past master and 50 year member of Milroy Masonic Lodge #139, Valley of Indianapolis Scottish Rite, life time member and past distinguished club secretary of downtown Kiwanis Club (1980-1985), past Director and served as an Ambassador for Bloomington Chamber of Commerce, Past Director Bloomington United Way, Past Chancellor Commander for Knights of Pythias Lodge in Milroy, Past Post Commander for the American Legion Post in Milroy and Past President of Milroy Community Club. He was a graduate of Milroy High School 1936. He operated business in Milroy for a few years before being drafted into military service in 1942. While in the Army graduated from the Curtiss-Wright Technical Institute as air craft mechanic and served with the 45th Air Depot Group in the 8th and 9th Air Force in England, France and Germany. After the war ended in Europe, assisted in dismantling German Air Force and was discharged Dec. 30, 1945 with rank of Staff Sgt. Retired from Bloomington Public Service Indiana in 1983 after working over 30 years in customer service and sales in Connersville, Greensburg, Columbus, Plainfield and Bloomington.
He is survived by one sister, Mary Lois Burgdoerfer, Connersville; one brother, Chester Matney Jr.,Milroy; three sons, Paul Matney, Columbus, David (wife Sally) Matney, Bloomington, Gary (Wife Lori) Matney, Greenwood; one daughter, Elizabeth Matney (Kate Crandell) Louisville,Ky.; 9 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; and 6 great-great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife Eva (Carr) Matney 1996; parents; three sisters, Gladys Buckley, Opal Shafer, Bertha Gwinnup; and two brothers, Lawrence and William Matney.
Visitation is 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 12, 2016 at the Milroy United Methodist Church. Funeral service will follow at 11 a.m. Rev. William Roth and Rev. David Mullens officiating. Burial at Old Milroy Cemetery, Milroy. Memorials to St. Paul United Methodist Church of Bloomington for playground equipment.
