Gerald's Story

Gerald N. "Jerry" Smith, 75 of Greenwood, passed away Friday, Nov. 25, 2016 at the Hearth at Stones Crossing in Greenwood.
He was born Sept. 22, 1941 in Kendallville, IN. to Norman Roy Smith and Delores Elizabeth (Stirn) Smith. He married Kay J. (Bergman) Smith on April 25, 1970 at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church in Kokomo, IN., she survives. He was a 1959 graduate of Rushville High School in Rushville, Indiana where he spent his school years. He then graduated from Ball State University in 1963 with a degree in history. He served in the United States Navy from 1963 to 1969 in the Naval Intelligence Department in Seattle, Washington. He retired in 2006 from JP Morgan Chase, formerly American Fletcher National Bank and Bank One after twenty three years in the trust real estate department. He was member of Sts. Francis and Clare Catholic Church in Greenwood where he was active in the men's club. He was also a member of the Greenwood American Legion Post 205. He had a passion for golf, enjoyed reading, history, and visiting historical sites and battlefields. He and his wife also enjoyed traveling. Survivors include his wife Kay J. (Bergman) Smith of Greenwood, IN., two daughters Karen A. Gray (Scott) of Pasadena, Maryland and Kristen E. Smith of Greenwood, IN. and their loving dog Bindi. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Father Stephen W. Giannini conducted a Mass of Christian Burial on Monday at Sts. Francis and Clare Catholic Church. Military honors followed the service at the church. Swartz Family Church and Chapel-Funeral and Cremation Services in Greenwood is handling the arrangements.
