Elsieferne (Ferne) Verline (Mendenhall) Stout, age 92, passed away January 10, 2017.
Ferne was born on the family homestead in Dundy County, Nebraska in 1925.
She was the daughter of Lydia Grams Mendenhall and Ellis B. Mendenhall. She graduated from Parks High School, Parks, Nebraska, 1943; Sterling College, Sterling, Kansas 1948; and Ball State University, Muncie, Indiana 1983. Ferne moved to Indiana in 1947 when she married Dale E. Stout (deceased).
As an educator, Ferne taught in one-room schools in Nebraska and was a substitute teacher for Rush County Schools for 10 years. Additionally, Ferne taught a memoir class titled, "Tell Your Story" through Ivy Tech, Bloomington after being inspired to author two books about her life titled: Dundy County Babe and Gitty UP!-Whoa. She was also a professional seamstress specializing in wedding dresses and other special occasion attire.
Ferne was an active member of the Arlington United Methodist Church. She also volunteered at several agencies including: 4-H, Senior Retired Volunteer Program (RSVP), Big Brothers/Big Sisters, Monroe County Historical Society, Salvation Army Women's Auxiliary (charter member), Senior Games, and WonderLab. For over 20 years, Ferne also made Hug-a-Bears to comfort children after surgery.
Survivors are her daughters Helen Kay Warring, Hillsdale, MI and Ruth Ann Holman, Bloomington, IN; five grandchildren Billy Warring and Wendy Warring Playford both of MI and Shawn Holman, Justin Holman, and Meg Holman Emmett of Bloomington, IN. There are also four great grand children. Ferne was preceded in death by her parents, and her brothers Alvin Mendenhall and Lyle Mendenhall.
Ferne bequeathed her body to IU School of Medicine. A celebration of life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be sent to the WonderLab, Arlington United Methodist Church, and Salvation Army Auxiliary.
