Carl Smith, 78, a lifelong Rushville resident passed away Friday, Sept. 16, 2016 at his home in Rushville. Carl was born in Rushville on March 3, 1938 to Ralph Smith and Lucile (Logan) Waggoner. He was raised by Lucille and step-father Richard Waggoner.
Carl married Nancy Grinstead on January 8, 1988 "HIS HIGH SCHOOL SWEETHEART AND LOVE OF HIS LIFE" and she preceded him in death on May 5, 1998. Carl graduated from Rushville High School in 1956. He attended Indiana University. Carl served in the U.S. Navy from 1958-1964, traveling around the world on the first nuclear powered voyage, the USS Enterprise. He was a graduate of the US Naval Nuclear Power Program and Nuclear Physics. In 1991 retired from IBM Corporation where he worked as a Computer Field Engineer for 30 years. He then pursued a career as a residential appraiser, retiring in 2006.
Carl was a lifetime member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church, where he served in various capacities. He was a lifetime member and past Exalted Rule of the Rushville Elks Club. He had been a member of the V.F.W., American Legion, and Eagles. He was also a member of the Stock Investment Club.
Carl enjoyed boating, camping, watching sports and news channels. He studied ancestry and Rush County History, which he loved to "tour" anyone who would go around the countryside and share his knowledge. He especially enjoyed his weekly outing for lunch at "Stories" and long rides. He loved to debate politics or any other current issue. Carl had an infectious laugh and sense of humor. He had a special love of all animals, especially his late Yorkie, Princess Di.
Carl is survived by a son, Richard Smith and wife Karen of Ohio, 2 step sons, J.D. Harrison and wife Jennifer of Springersville, IN and Steve Harrison and wife Theresa of Glenwood, IN, 2 daughters, Karla and husband Gary Ralston of Rushville and Amanda Mohr and Fiance Greg Jones of Connersville, IN, step daughter, Katie and husband Kerry Hill of Rushville, a brother Wayne Smith and wife Carolyn of W. VA, half-brother, David Smith of Speedway, 2 half-sisters, Judy Edelman of Richmond, IN and Marsha and husband Greg Wainscot of Indianapolis, 5 grandchildren, Emily Smith, Natacia Crowder, Tyla Orme, Kasey Barnard and Kaylynn Mohr, and 5 great grandchildren Mackenzie, Macie and Benson Crowder, Kameron Orme and Carter Stephens.
In Addition to his parents, step-father and his wife, Carl was preceded in death by a half-brother, Steven Smith.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 20, 2016 at Moster Mortuary, Rushville. Friends are welcome to visit from 11 a.m. until the time of service that same day at the mortuary. Pastor Roy E. Ice will preside. Burial will be in Rushville's East Hill Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Rushville Animal Shelter or the Charity of Donor's choice.
