Bertha I. Guffin


Bertha I. Guffin, 98 of Rushville passed away on May 18, 2019 in Rushville. She was born on May 27, 1920 in Bache, OK to the late Samuel "S.M." and Lena A. (Feather) Russell. She graduated in 1937 from Peru High School. Bertha married Walter L. Durkes in 1940 and he preceded her in death in 1946. She married Charles H. Guffin on June 18, 1949 and he preceded her in death on May 22, 1997.
Bertha worked at Fraley's Implements for 19 years then went on to work as Norm Copple's bookkeeper at Radio Shack and True Value. She was a lifetime member of First Baptist Church. Bertha enjoyed playing the organ, sewing, and baking in her spare time.
Bertha is survived by her sons, Lee Durkes of Houston, TX and John D. Guffin of Rushville, IN; daughter, Lorraine (Roddy) Eastwood of Rushville, IN; brothers, James "Jim" (Gerry) Russell of CT and Jerry (Wanda) Russell of TN. She will also be missed by her 8 grandchildren, 5 step-grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, 9 great-great grandchildren; many nieces and nephews.
Bertha is preceded in death by her parents, daughter, Judy Gard; daughter-in-law, Cathy Guffin; and her 5 sisters.
Services will be held on Friday, May 24, 2019 at 1 PM in Moster Mortuary, with Rev. Dr. Dave Richardson presiding. Friends are welcome to visit the family from 11 AM until the time of service in the mortuary on Friday. Burial will be held in Arlington East Hill Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made out to First Baptist Church in Rushville.
